Character pieces

If you are like me, you enjoy knowing how things are put together.  Here are a few pictures of block #3 to be finished tomorrow (hopefully).  This is one of the simpler blocks, so you can see all the pieces that go into making the whole picture.  I separated out the pieces of her shirt so you can see the three pieces cut for the shirt.  I start with a picture that has been sized to fit on the size block chosen for the quilt....

Then I cut plastic templates with detail markings on them for each different color piece in the picture.  Plus one whole picture to overlay in order to recheck placement of parts.  The parts are drawn onto the right piece of fabric with water soluble ink and then cut out.  A piece of fusible web also has to be cut in order to attach all the pieces to the base block (in this case, a white square), so each piece is cut twice......once with fabric, once with fusible web. (wonder under).  The pieces are then ironed on.  Each piece is then machine appliqued with the appropriate color thread, and then the handwork embroidery takes care of all the tiny details.

Here are the pieces to the above picture.....

All pieces needed except shirt which is shown in the next photo.....I have separated the shirt pieces so you can see how each piece is cut.  The fabric is cut on the OUTSIDE of the drawn lines, and the fusible web is cut on the  INSIDE of the drawn lines.  That keeps the web always under the fabric so it doesn't get on your iron (really messy, gummy stuff when it melts!!)  The template has all the details on it.

Shirt template, fusing, and fabric.

And this is how it looks after it is fused but before any stitching is done.

Any questions?  Happy to answer.

I can't believe how quickly you're turning these out! So much attention to detail with the fabrics (I'm assuming you're working from a lot of fabrics you already but maybe you had to buy special for special elements?) then all the satin stitching, and then all the little embroidered embellishments - Wow!!

Cheryl, my family and friends have given me fabric over the years. So much, in fact, that I will die before I can use it all up, and these little characters take such tiny scraps. It doesn't make a dent in my stash. One of these days, I will probably have to donate it to someone who wants it all.........you??

The love you put into each of your projects just shines through. . .both in the beautiful results and in the joy of your words. It doesn't sound like labor when you describe all of these intricate steps; it sounds like the voice of a dear friend/mother/grandmother telling how she creates treasures!
