Tree cutting and gravel spreading day

For my friends and family NOT on Facebook, here is what happened around here yesterday.  We had four trees removed (dead or dying) and spread gravel to "top dress" the driveway.

80-foot poplar had a hole at the base of the trunk

We were busy spreading gravel while they were doing the trees.

Splitting the wood

First load dumped

The "supervisor"

By lunchtime, they were over halfway done.

While two went to get lunch, two stayed to cut down a dead oak up near the road.

Almost done with this one

new gravel

Taking down the Empress tree.  These trees were imported from China (they are a pest as far as I'm concerned) and the only person allowed to have them in China was the Empress......thus, the name.  This tree was blocking the door to the shop and was dying.  When he cut it down, he said there was a hole all the way down in the middle of the trunk.

Getting into mid afternoon and out in full sun.  Glad they are young and strong.

Brush off the trees for the burn pile.

Wood gleaned from 4 trees.  Two oaks (one large, one small), a poplar, and an Empress.

Now to do more stacking!!  No hurry, though...this pile needs to season for a year.
We're taking the day "off" today to play and rest!  Getting too old for this!

Now, who decided it was gravel- and tree- day on the same day? Yes, we're getting too old for heavy-duty work - seems like you could have spread it out a little more (I'm not talking about the stones now!) Great photo-story!

haha, Cheryl. There really was a logical reason for the scheduling....the guy doing the trees was also the gravel guy. No sense in coming with an empty truck, so we had him bring gravel on the day he came to do the trees. We had originally planned to take our time, but one thing led to another and it was a beautiful day, so we just ended up finishing the gravel. Two tons sounds like a lot, but it really wasn't. Just enough to top dress the driveway and fill in a few valleys and dips. The stacking of the wood can wait since it is unseasoned and has to sit for a year anyway. We will pick at it a little at a time. Besides, whatever happened to that Fall-like weather......it's August again!
