Woodsmen's Meet 2013

We had a beautiful Fall day for the annual Woodmen's Meet over in Haywood County.  The Cradle of Forestry, the normal venue for this annual event, was closed due to the Government Shutdown, so Haywood Community College hosted the event on their campus on the baseball field.  Six colleges were represented - Haywood CC (the Host), Montgomery CC (Troy, NC), Dabney S. Lancaster CC (Clinton Forge, VA), NC State (Raleigh, NC), Warren Wilson College (Swannanoa, NC), and Penn State/Mont Alto (Mont Alto, PA).

Here are a few shots of the competition:

This video is of the pole climb.  Both women and men participated in this event.  The kids kept trying to do it in under 5 seconds,  and this guy made it in 4.6 - WOW, can you imagine?!!   (I've been having trouble posting videos to Blogger for the past two posts....can't figure out why it won't play correctly..Any other bloggers know?)  Here's the link to the one on Facebook..it works:

This was on the way to the meet...very foggy morning.

Somewhere around Canton, we saw hot air balloons to the North.

The color of the maples on campus was a littler further along than ours here at home.

Don't know this bush, but I'll be finding out.  Pretty "fruits" ...bumpy and firm.

HCC parent?  Lumberjacks and Lumberjills!

I got a kick out of the HCC kids.  Most all the guys did their hair in a RED/ORANGE Mohawk for the event.  They are the ones in the gray shirts with red suspenders.

Archery

Log roll.  They had to roll it halfway, turn it around, roll it the rest of the way, and put it through the pole markers without touching.  Then two other team members had to do it coming back the other way.  Whew, I got tired just watching them!

This was the women's horizontal speed chop.  The gal from Warren Wilson College was done before the others hardly started!!  WOW!!

An exhibitor with a beautiful red-tailed hawk.  Those are the hawks we have in our yard.

Close-up of the red mohawk.

Water boil.  Given a "plank" and must chop up for kindling, make your own fire, and get your water to boil first.  Dish soap is put into the can so the bubbles boil out.  No mistaking who wins.

Parting shot for this gorgeous Fall day!!

and a good time was had by all! As to the video, no help here, we just use YouTube. Norris sometimes objects because the version in Blogger is low-def - I think last time he tried to suggest viewing on YouTube for the best video experience.

I put it on Facebook and it did just fine, so it's just Blogger. I think I wouldn't even have blogger if ALL my friends and family were on FB. It's so much easier.
